Your wedding – your way. The fake 60th birthday party that was actually a wedding.

Updated: Mar 31

Hi I'm Jean, I am a celebrant and help couples with their wedding ceremony - the way they want it. This blog is all about Jim and Karen's surprise wedding when they surprised their guests attending what they thought was Karen's 60th birthday party when in fact it was their wedding ceremony at the Bothy Glasgow.

I first met Karen and Jim in a face to face Discovery meeting in Costa last year. They told me they wanted their wedding to be a surprise and they had a fair idea as to how they would spring the surprise. The guests were to be invited along to help Karen celebrate her 60th birthday party then they would surprise them when they rocked in wearing their wedding attire.

Firstly though they wanted to be married in an intimate ceremony with their close family in attendance. That's where I came in as I had a head full of ideas. We hit it off in an instant and a further meeting was arranged to start planning for their special day.

Fast forward six months and several zoom meetings later where we got to know each other well where we created their intimate wedding ceremony with heartfelt speeches and a ritual that represented their special bond. We had a remembrance for their parents, a sand ceremony with the participation of their Grandson in the ceremony, a lovely reading by Karen's brother who travelled all the way from Canada to be with them, we shared their love story and revealed words of wisdom from someone very close to them both, vows and ring exchange and sealed the deal by sipping from the quaich whereby creating a ceremony that felt authentically 'them'.

This was followed by the big surprise to their unsuspecting guests when the happy couple rocked in wearing their wedding attire. What a joyous double occasion with the guests partying and celebrating with them into the night...........not just Karen's 60th as they had initially thought but rejoicing the union of these two fabulous humans.

This fabulous couple have been together over three decades. Thirty years has passed since Jim put a ring on Karen's finger. Up there as one of the longest engagements in history. They both have a mixed bunch of strengths but when put together they are as strong as a rock and their beautiful wedding ceremony was a testament as to how far they have come together and a symbol of the promises they first made all those years ago to love each other for the rest of their lives. The party that followed was pardon the pun, the icing on the cake, wedding cake that is, and not birthday cake as expected.

"Thanks Jean, you done an absolutely fantastic job of marrying me and Karen, you put everyone at ease, and the actual ceremony was fantastic. Thanks for everything Jean, you're a beautiful person.

I would recommend Jean to anyone for a ceremony of any kind.
